Choosing a bed rail may seem confusing. Before you select side rails for bed, determine if the person who will be using the bed rail needs to be confined to bed and will have a caregiver. If this is the case, the appropriate bed rail would be full length, 30” or longer. Keep in mind, longer bed side rails need to be raised and lowered by a caregiver in order for the patient to get in and out of bed. This is not something the patient will be able to accomplish on their own.
Another scenario warranting the use of a bed rail would be when the user wants to remain independent while getting in and out of bed. The appropriate bed rail for this case, considered to be a bed handle, should measure 18” or less. Such a bed rail provides assistance getting in and out of bed and prevents the user from rolling out of bed as well.
